Three meanings of "Julian date"
1. Day of the year
The day's position in the year: January 1 is day 1, and December 31 is day 365, or day 366 in a leap year. In shipping, manufacturing and date codes, this is usually what "Julian date" means. Today there are 88 days left in the year.
2. The YYDDD date code
The last two digits of the year followed by the three-digit day of the year. February 1, 2027 is 27032: "27" for the year and "032" for the 32nd day. Some codes use the full year instead (2027032). If you are reading a code printed on a product, check with the maker: brands are free to use their own formats.
3. The astronomical Julian Day
Astronomers count days in one long run that started at noon, Universal Time, on January 1, 4713 BC in the old Julian calendar. The Julian Day Number is the whole number for the day that starts at noon UTC on a given date. January 1, 2000 is Julian Day Number 2451545. This count has nothing to do with the Julian calendar used before 1582, apart from the name.

How the numbers are worked out
