Charts and one-step methods for turning a calendar date into a day-of-year number, a YYDDD code or a Julian Day Number, and back again.

Date to day of the year

Find the month in the top row of the chart for the right year and read down to the day. Monday, February 1, 2027 is day 32, so its YYDDD code is 27032.

Day of the year to date

Look for the number in the chart, or subtract the days in each month, starting from January, until what is left fits in a month. Day 200 of 2027: the months before July have 181 days, and 200 − 181 = 19, so day 200 is Monday, July 19, 2027.

For a YYDDD code, split off the first two digits as the year and use the last three as the day. Leap years matter: from March 1 on, the same date has a number one higher in a leap year. 2026 has 365 days and 2027 has 365 days.
